Listening as Surrender: Ethical Storytelling and Narrative Change
For 20 years, StoryCorps has helped people across the country record intimate, one-on-one conversations with neighbors and loved ones, and shared excerpts of those stories each week with millions of listeners on NPR and social media. Audiences tell us that these stories make them feel more connected to others, illuminate their understanding of social issues, and inspire them to take action.
Join this panel of seasoned StoryCorps staff as we reflect on what it means to practice ethical storytelling across our work in “storytelling for good,” and how these practices can help foundation and nonprofit communicators.
We’ll explore:
Lessons in how narrative change requires shifts in approach to story collection and dissemination
Replicable project practices to center storyteller trust and agency
How an investment in time and care can yield both trusting relationships and engaging content
