Media companies and nonprofit organizations alike are increasingly turning to podcasts as a way to give our most impacted communities a place to share their stories in their own voice. This conversation with The Atlantic and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) explores how each organization navigated producing and launching their very first narrative podcasts. The Atlantic’s Deputy Editor Gillian White and Executive Producer Katherine Wells will discuss The Atlantic’s “Floodlines,” which addresses the tragedies associated with Hurricane Katrina and how they were compounded by the decisions and the legacies of people and institutions. And Lecia Brooks, SPLC’s Chief of Staff, will discuss “Sounds Like Hate,” which tells stories of people and communities grappling with hate and searching for solutions. These are gravely serious issues, but both “Floodlines” and “Sounds Like Hate” aim to inform and empower listeners.
